	Red Light Vintage Rebrand

A Studio-54 inspired rebrand for a treasured Seattle vintage store

	why rebrand?
Red light vintage has been one of Seattle's primary vintage destinations since 1996 but currently lacks branding that shows its funky character and quirky charm. The current branding is limited and inconsistent across media channels. The challenge is to create a new logo and brand identity that communicates the brand’s purpose and ethos, while standing out from competitors.
	
	
a solution tailored to fitA solid brand strategy was created around key tones/words that represent the brand identity to serve the brand through environmental, social, and interactive media. Through mind mapping exercises, the key words “rebellious”, “unique”, and “timeless” were chosen to represent the brand character. Then the tagline ‘You are the party’ was chosen from combining these ideas. The tagline embodies the celebration of and fun of vintage shopping and dressing.

	research and audience
History, Audience, and Category Audits were conducted. I visited the store and took photos to make notes of the current branding and visual narrative of the storefront. I observed the current instagram and website to document the store’s tone of voice and current needs. Based on their marketing and what I saw in person, the demographic is gen z to baby boomers: artists and creatives, people interested in sustainability and/or fashion.
	ProcessResearch was collected on Red Light Vintage’s background, audience, competition, and their demographic. Through a series of branding exercises a mission statement (external goal), brand positioning statement (internal goal), brand promise and key brand character traits were developed. The brand character traits were developed into a concept and mood board that helped drive the design of the entire project. Only after clarifying who the brand was did a logo and various deliverables get made.

New York has more than its’ fair share of arts &#38;amp; culture and lifestyle magazines. But Seattle is lacking in a publication with a fresh and distinctively progressive point of view.
	Seattle’s solution for news, art, and hot takes
Although there are lifestyle publications based in Seattle, they lack long-form stories and a point of view. Puddle Magazine is unapologetically progressive and seeks to be a trusted Seattle-based leftist and artistic source.

The logo went through a few iterations, with the key idea being to tie in a water element with the text. The second-to-last iteration has rain streaks through all put the first letter, however the sharpness of the lines was not on brand. The final logo version has more organic shaped streaks of rain through the letters.

The Puddle style can be defined as organic and soft, with desaturated primary and secondary colors. The photo collages are primarily edited with the brand colors, with one exception for a specific figure. The layout influences are broad and disparate, with fonts and illustration style unifying the different magazine spreads.

Landing page
The landing page was the first component for the Puddle Branding, created during Winter 2020-2021. During that time the name, fonts, colors, were chosen and the website was created in partnership with Jenny Littlefield. The project was expanded in Fall 2021, and later finished during Summer 2022.

	Problem to Solve
The Boomer demographic does not necessarily trust new technology when it comes to food, especially meat according to an article published in “The Star.” How do we get Boomers to be excited about trying cultured meat and to catch their attention enough to get them to purchase the product in store? 
	SolutionWe need to present the product in a trustworthy way while also appealing to Boomers’ general aesthetic preferences and sensibility. The final design solution appeals to Boomers nostalgia by referencing 60s and 70s graphic design colors and themes. Referencing this familiar aesthetic will allow the demographic to be more comfortable trying this new product.

	Two mood boards were initially proposed, with two very different directions. One was hyper modern with a contemporary aesthetic and the other more vintage and nostalgia inspired. After evaluating the intended demographic, which skewed towards baby boomers, the vintage inspired direction was chosen.

	research and audienceResearch was done on 60’s and 70’s graphic design, particularly logo design and signage. In additon, a category study on plant-based and cultured meat was completed. I observed the existing branding for the parent brand ‘New Age Meats’ and its’ characteristics before beginning creation of the the three sub-brands (Betterwurst, Chicken Notlets, and Super Steak.) The demographic is Baby Boomers (people born between 1946-1964)


	processI began with looking at similar products in the category and noticing themes and conventions throughout existing brands. Vintage design references were sourced, including some 60’s &#38;amp; 70’s food packaging, food advertisements, as well as motel signage. The visual themes that surfaced were the combination of sans-serif and serif or script fonts and use of background shapes to ground these designs. The “Betterwurst” design was completed first and the “Chicken Notlets” and “Super Steak” designs followed.

A fun and playful redesign of a well-loved park’s wayfinding system
	Problem To Solve
Green Lake Park’s wayfinding system is dated and inconsistent throughout the different signage. Green Lake Park is a vibrant, busy, and fun park with a range of visitors and a range of functions. The current signage lacks consistency and character. The park needs a unified look and effective wayfinding system that is palatable and easily navigable to a broad range of patrons but also provides visual interest and excitement.

	SolutionI landed on a concept that focuses on whimsy and explores the mysteries that the lake itself holds, the history of the water and how the lake came to be. The design story is fun and playful while maintaining legibility and accessibility by centering a modern palette with a high level of contrast. Seattle is a modern and progressive city so this redesign at one of it’s most prominent parks reflects that ideology.

	Research and AudienceTo research the park I visited a few times to make notes and take photos of the existing signage. I observed the patrons who were present when I was at the park. There were people of all ages and who seemed to come from various different backgrounds. To find the visual direction for the wayfinding system, I looked at modern signage for other parks and museums around the world. For the mural, I looked into the history of the lake and its origin.
	ProcessAfter researching the park and collecting visual references, I began iterating on a mood board and different color and type combinations. I applied these different ideas to a sample sign I created before deciding on a palette with a muted dark background and bright saturated accent colors. To create the point of interest signs, I conducted additional research on the features of the lake and its history.

	The matter at hand
Develop the brand look for the 2019 album “Stuffed &#38;amp; Ready” by Cherry Glazerr. Construct a series of deliverables to best support the album including album cover front and back, tour poster, longsleeve t-shirt, baseball cap, and stickers.
	Here’s my take
A cohesive visual style was created that followed the tone and lyrics of the album. This manifested in a mood board and subsequent deliverables that are built around the visual language incorporated in the mood board and the feelings of isolation, loneliness, shame, and self-reflection that are present throughout the album.

	Research and audienceThe research for this project included listening to the album through several times, paying attention to both lyrical content and emotive qualities of the sound. The research also including observing the current branding for the band. The implied demographic is Cherry Glazerr listeners and people who listen to similar music who will interact with the design incidentally.

	ProcessRepeat listening and analyzing of the album was done while noting recurring themes and emotive tones. Following that, a moodboard was created based around the qualities in the album’s content. I produced the designs in this order: album artwork, tour poster, merchandise assets were produced then applied to the different merch deliverables.
